I'm trying to get a job as an Engineer. How can I get people to notice me?

Open source projects are awesome. Lots of people use them, and if you make quality contributions, people notice. Find a project with a lot of watchers and look for places you can help. Fork it, play with it, make small changes.Find a subsection you understand well, and see if there are any improvements you can make. Send a pull request and see if the maintainers think so too! Put these contributions in your resume and use them as code samples. At the end of the day, clear, working, compelling code talks. I'll even bet you a beer you learn something in the process.

I'm lost. I don't understand what these projects do, but I'm looking to hire an engineer.
